LOGEX Financial Planning vs. Excel: Key Insights from the German hospital Klinikum Memmingen
About the organisation
Klinikum Memmingen is a modern secondary care hospital and an academic teaching hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich). The organisation operates with a structured and reliable financial planning framework, supported by an experienced controlling function.
The challenge
Although Klinikum Memmingen already had a strong foundation in place, the team wanted to gain an external perspective. For many years, the controlling department had been working with an established and optimised Excel‑based budgeting process. Even so, there was a clear intention to critically review the existing budgeting structure and identify opportunities for further improvement.
Three guiding questions shaped the project:
- What additional potential can be unlocked in budgeting and financial planning, even with an already stable process?
- Where does software‑supported planning offer advantages over Excel?
- How can budgeting and cost centre structures be set up more efficiently for the future?
The objective was not an either‑or decision between Excel and software, but rather inspiration, reflection, and further development of the existing budgeting logic.

The approach
In the summer of 2025, the LOGEX team and the controlling department at Klinikum Memmingen came together for an intensive two‑day project. The working atmosphere was open and pragmatic, creating space for constructive discussions and new insights.
Together, the teams:
- Loaded and analysed actual data (such as cost centres and activity data) in LOGEX Financial Planning
- Reviewed structures, allocations, and planning logic
- Tested different planning approaches directly within the system
- Compared Excel‑based workflows with the automated validation and transparency features of the LOGEX solution
A key insight: simplifying the structure
During the project, it became clear that Klinikum Memmingen operates with an exceptionally large number of cost centres that are rarely used. This level of fragmentation limits transparency, increases data maintenance effort, and makes reporting more complex than necessary.
A clearer, more consolidated structure would, over time:
-
- Reduce manual effort
- Simplify data maintenance
- Significantly improve transparency in reporting
Value for both organisations
- Klinikum Memmingen gained greater clarity around its planning structure and identified concrete opportunities for optimisation.
- LOGEX received valuable input to further develop LOGEX Financial Planning for the German healthcare market.
The project represented a genuine collaboration with lasting value for both sides.
